OTHER PROJECTS

Inner City Asthma Consortium (ICAC):  We are one of ten sites funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study immune-based therapies in pediatric asthma.  Two such projects are ongoing:

Community Pharmacy Intervention:  This is a prospective, single blind, randomized clinical trial of enhanced care and education for asthma by community pharmacists.  It seeks to extend the IMPACT DC Asthma Clinic care to additional providers to improve long-term medication compliance.

Prospective Multi-Center Study of Bronchiolitis Admissions: Etiology and Disposition: Bronchiolitis is the number one reason children younger than 1 year are hospitalized. Despite how common this disease is, little research has studied which children with bronchiolitis are at risk for severe problems, and no research has studied when it is safe for infants to be discharged from the hospital. This study aims to determine what pathogens cause bronchiolitis in hospitalized children, and to develop high and low risk criteria that can be used to determine optimal dishcharge criteria.

AsthMap:  The study seeks to capture the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of a large cohort of asthmatic children aged 24 months to 17 years from the Washington DC metropolitan area.  Working with Dr. Robert Freishstat from the Center for Genomic Medicine of the Children’s Research Institute, IMPACT DC staff are prospectively collecting buccal samples for analysis of selected single-nucleotide polymorphisms linked to asthma.
